A special education teacher works with children suffering from mental, physical, social, and cognitive development, or combination of difficulties. She has to play a dual role in this job. One as an educator, and the another as an advocate. In the first job category, she will provide all learning facilities to children with special needs. In the second, she will work with volunteers and parents and help children who are delayed of education, and physical and mental growth. She will support and help children under the Special Education Programs. Under this program, there are instructions designed specially for children with all types of disabilities. The teacher will accommodate students, perform assessment, create plans of instruction, and handle classroom management.
A degree in Early Childhood Education is must to work as a special needs educator. The need of licensing/certification will depend on the state government. Along with degree and license, the teachers have to undergo training and do fieldwork for some period.
