Restaurant server has the main job of serving drinks and food to the customers at a hotel or restaurant. These professionals also have to answer questions related to food, beverages, take orders and serve the food to every customer. Once the meal is over, servers will have to calculate the amount the customer owes to the restaurant, and in most of the cases, take cash from the customer, giving the remaining change whenever required. The responsibility of the sever will mostly depend on the business; however, in most of the cases the primary duty is serving food and taking orders. These people will closely work with the kitchen and wait staff for making sure that the restaurant is functioning in proper manner.
In all the upscale restaurants, servers will be a part of the entire dining experience, giving recommendations and suggestions, like wine pairings. They will also help the customers for personalizing their meals and the service they provide is more formal and attentive. In restaurants, where they have revolving menus, servers will also have to meet the needs of the kitchen staff or the manager's everyday for service to discuss the offerings they have that day. The topics, which are usually discussed in that meetings include, food preparation, specials and the ingredients that are going to be used.
Some of the extra duties for the restaurant server are greeting the customers, setting up the tables, processing payments and cleaning the entire dining and sitting area. The position of a restaurant server is of entry level; therefore, a college degree is enough to get a job. Previous experience will be an added advantage, but most of the restaurants will provide a professional training to individuals. However, whenever you apply for jobs, you will have to make sure that you send out a covering letter, because it also a deciding factor. Below you will find a sample restaurant server cover letter that you can refer to.

Dear Ms. Taylor,
Re: Restaurant Server Position
Ref: U8274
Today, I am writing to apply for the position of a Restaurant Server, which was advertised on www.careerbuilder.com yesterday. I think that my background in customer service and my friendly nature will make the right candidate for this job.
Earlier, I was working as a Server with a VIP Lounge in Portsmouth. This position required me to have remarkable communication skills and a good standard of customer service, since every day I had to deal with VIP clients. I had to handle customer disputes on regular basis, and I always made an effort to handle the disputes in a respectful and polite manner. Working in this profession, and as a member from the City High School cricket and basketball teams, I love working in teams, and I can easily follow all the instructions that are given to me. My ability to speak Spanish will also be an added advantage for your organization.
I can work for the weekend shifts and even after 4.30 pm on Fridays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please find my enclosed resume and I await a positive reply from you soon. You can reach me anytime at 757-397-9139 or e-mail me at d.billie@example.com. Thanks in advance for reviewing my resume.
Yours sincerely,
Billie Duff

Always be precise in your cover letter, because this will be your only chance to impress the recruiter. You have to sound professional and not like some needy person, who is too desperate. Keep it personal, simple and creative. Good luck!
