There have many claims that recruiting team never reads the cover letters, but a research has showed that the banks too these days read cover letters. Most of the people get rejected due to their cover letters. You can easily avoid the common mistakes and get your foot at the interview doorstep. Cover letters are very similar to test scores, a great score will not help you much, but a poor one will definitely kill your chances.
Whenever you are writing a cover letter remember that you are not writing your life story. You may have had an interesting life, but all the recruiting team wants you to do is simply get to the point. Tell them who you are, what you have done and why they should consider you. The recruiter will not be interested in knowing your favorite book, but all he/she cares about is whether you will be able to do your job or not.
Mentioning important skills is necessary, but adding every hobby, skill or interest of yours is worthless. Logic is the ideal key when you are selling yourself to someone and that is whole purpose of your cover letter. Therefore, you must never write a letter with a full stream of consciousness. An unimaginable number of cover letters are trashed just because they fail to present the background of the applicant.
The ideal cover letter should not be more than three paragraphs, but sometimes extensive experience can change the format, which is alright. Does not matter what your background is; just keep your cover letter logical, relevant and brief. Here is an example equity trader cover letter that will be helpful for you.
