Dear Mr. Young:

As a responsible parent, I want to share an important issue with you. I recently came to know that the novel "The Catcher in the Rye" is part of he school's syllabus. It will be taught to grade 12 students. My daughter told me this today morning. I'm really upset with this idea.

The catcher in Rye is a popular novel. It has good narration style. That's fine. But, the novel has a profanity. Such a language creates a bad impact on the minds of youth. The novelist uses bad language in the novel so often that the teenagers will feel that is common to use such language in any situation. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the novel is not a role model that should be presented in front of the young minds. The hero in the novel absconds from the home, drinks, smokes, and uses profane language. This is something which students should not read at this age.

There are many interesting works of arts in form of novels that can be prescribed in the syllabus. The Old man and the Sea is a classic novel which motivates the reader to struggle till end to you achieve the goals.

I strongly feel that such a novel having profanity should not be given to young students who are below the age of 18. Look into this matter and get back to me if you have to say anything about it. I look forward for your reply.

Yours sincerely

Anthony Smith
