Health unit coordinators perform slightly higher level of duties as compared to the nurses though their duties seem to be much similar to the hospital nurses. Duties and Responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator:
- A health care unit coordinator performs primary check-ups of the patients and makes sure that they are admitted to the concerned doctors
- They check for temperature and any primary signs and symptoms in the patients which the doctor can use for the further diagnostic purpose
- They verify birth certificates and previous health reports submitted by the patients and highlights important points from them which are helpful for the doctor in the treatment
- These health unit coordinators also schedule appointments of the patients and make sure that the hospital is functioning smoothly
- Hand over test reports to the doctors
- Perform certain clerical duties such as maintaining important papers and records of the patients
- Order equipments and infrastructure required in the hospital
- Keep a track of the number of patients admitted to the hospital on a particular day and the collects of the hospital
- Help the patients in filling the hospital forms and understand the procedures of the hospital
- Solve their complains and collect reviews of the hospital from the patients
- Make changes in the management if necessary and train newly hired nurses in performing their duties

- Should have expert written and verbal communication skills to interact with the patients and provide them proper assistant

- Should have ability to perform minor medical checkups of the patients
- Planning skills and decision making skills are also required
- They should have sound knowledge of all the medical procedures and should be courteous and polite while interacting with the patients
- Multitasking and willing to handle extra work pressure
- Flexible to work in any department of the hospital
- Should posses ability to deal with patients of all age groups
- Knowledge of the computer database system of the hospital and common software used in the hospital
- Should be detail oriented
- Ability to direct the patients on medical prescriptions given by the doctors
- They must believe in team work as they are they have to work in coordination with all the hospital staff
- Emotionally stable and should have ability to confront the patients with serious medical issues
Educational Requirements of Health Unit Coordinators:
Health unit coordinators should possess a degree in nursing and should undergo training in hospital management. Some hospitals even hire high school diploma holders as health unit coordinators. They need to undergo training for at least 6 months in the hospital management.
Passing the health unit coordinator certification exam one can work as licensed health unit coordinator and is designated as Certified Health Unit Coordinator (CHUC)
