Online Resume Posting

How good is Online Resume Posting?

The newest and some say the greatest thing to happen to job searching in a long time is the online resume posting. There are many companies out there that shall remain nameless who base an entire website on posting other people's resumes. There are many people who do sign up for this service. Some services charge to use their site. The premise is that you post your resume and then you wait for a company or employers to check it out and become interested in your posting and then they call you.

This service is great if you are looking elsewhere for work, if you are solely putting all of your eggs in one basket then you may be waiting for a long time. Sometimes it takes weeks to get a hit or a lead. Now, it would be a shame if you paid for a service and did not get one hit. You really have a better chance of looking through the newspaper and sending your resume out to 10 jobs. You will at least hear from 7 out of the ten jobs, unless it is not what you applied for.

It is all a hit and miss idea. Unless you have a spectacular resume where you have exactly what people are looking for. You could be waiting a very long time. What makes this worse is that you may be paying for it by the week or by the month. If you have your heart set on doing this then try to find a service that will post your resume for free. Then you have nothing to lose except time.

However, here are five rules that you must consider while posting your resume online:

  1. One thumb rule for posting resume online, never pay a big sum for posting your resume on a specific job site or for using their resources. The site may look amazing, but you have no idea of what they will be doing with your resume. They can possibly be making job postings. Some of the reputable sites will be getting their fees from the organizations, which are looking for resumes, and never from you
  2. Never bother to post to a site that is international or national if you do not wish to relocate. If you do not wish to move, then spend all your time looking for companies in your locality and sending them your resume. Check the local newspaper regularly, and make sure that you check for job postings on that newspaper's website
  3. If you come across a job opening, which requires skills that are diverse or some of the arcane skills, then you must never bother to apply for those jobs. Skip all the job postings, which ask you for your salary expectations or asks your current salary. It may be hard to believe, but some of the organizations will check the online sites for testing the salary range and job descriptions. They have absolutely no intention of hiring you, but they are planning to do some research that too cheap
  4. Start posting on a broad-spectrum job site only if you are able to find at least five latest job openings, which interests you. if you get fewer than five, then it means that the organizations that want your profile, do not come across this site regularly. Moreover, if you are unable to read the job postings before you register your resume, then that site is of no good to you and you should not waste your time registering on it
  5. Try to find sites, which are specially geared for whatever you want to do, like peer organizations and trade associations. They will usually have job and sections for resume posting. All the savvy companies will know to go there, instead of the general websites, when they are looking for a professional with special skills

Some people have had great success with this service and that is great for them but there are just as many if not more that have no success and they only thing they do have is less money for the cost of the service.
