Domestic violence counselors work with victims and perpetrators and try to pacify the situations. When working with the victims, they provide methods and techniques on how to avoid being a target of violence and how to avoid situations giving rise to violence. With perpetrators, they provide tips on managing anger and behaving in a sober manner. In both the situations, there aim is to help families live in harmony. They may also find shelter for victims of abuse by the hands of family member and ensure their safety. Besides counseling, their role is also to plan, arrange, and coordinate public education activities.
To apply for a domestic violence counselor position, obtain a degree in social work or counseling. There may also be a requirement of license depending on the state. Along with the degree and license, you have to work for a year or so as a social worker with some organization. Volunteer experience in helping others will also help in this counseling career.
